Bangalore, DHNS: several Bangalore based companies have bagged the Institute of Directors' Golden Peacock national Quality Awards 2003. Instituted in 1991 these are awarded annually to recognize as also appreciate quality achievements by Indian Industries under various sectors.

Dr Madhav Mehra is a unique management visionary and a futuristic thinker. He is the founder of India's Institute of Directors and is Chairman of World Quality Council and President of UK based World Council for Corporate Governance. He speaks to The Asian Age in a candid interview.

Feeling good? May not be for long. For, the Planning Commission may boast of creating 84 lakh jobs annually, but India's growing population is by and large jobless, according to experts. This has become the biggest challenge, as the economic recovery hasn't seen much job creation. An estimated 35 million Indians are unemployed and another 20 million young people will enter the market in the next four years.

Dr Madhav Mehra is a unique management visionary with a strong passion for promoting Indian brand overseas. He is the founder of India's Institute of Directors and is currently Chairman of World Quality Council and President of UK based World Council for Corporate Governance.

What led you to start this Institute of Directors?

According to a Chinese proverb if you wish to clean a staircase, you have to begin at the top. Founding of IOD coincided with the beginning of India's economic reforms. We thought the only way to improve the competitiveness of India's companies is to upgrade professional skills of the directors.

India is witness to an increasing differential between an ordinary worker's wagers and a chief executieve. The differential has moved dramatically to touch 1:400 as against 1:20 two decades ago, a study conducted by the Centre for Corporate Governance indicated. According to the survey there is an urgent need to rein in excessive compensation...

Dr Mehra believes that Indians abroad are the most innovative race in the world ...

A one of its kind non-profit apex association of directors in India commemorated its 14th Foundation Day at India International Centre (IIC) in Delhi recently. On this occasion Dr Najma Heptulla, Deputy Chairperson, Rajya Sabha, and national Chairperson of IOD along with Dr Madhav Mehra, President, IOD presented the annual "Distinguished Fellowship" awards to Vijay Mallya, Chairman, UB Group, U K Bose, CEO, Sahara Airlines, M S Ramachandran, CMD, Indian Oil Corporation, TKA Nair, Chairman, Public Enterprises selection Board, CPK Nair, Chairman Leela Group and Dr Uddeh Kohli, President, AIMA for their outstanding contribution to business and society. First Distinguished Fellowship of IOD was awarded to Bharat Ratna APJ Abdul Kalam in 1994.
